Fundraising for SeeAbility – Keeping it legal

Fundraising is great fun! However you choose to raise vital funds for SeeAbility, we want to make sure you have the best experience. To do this there may be some extra things to consider. If in any doubt, drop us an email on events@seeability.org

Public Collections

The most important part of any public collection – either on a street, a busy shopping centre or a live event – is getting permission.

For locations such as private land or inside buildings (supermarkets, sports venues, theatres etc.) you will need to ask the owners if you can collect there. Depending on the location, you may be able to speak with them directly, but often you will need to contact a central team who will have available collection slots to offer you.

If you are collecting on the street, you will need to get permission and a licence from the local council. Forms are available online (search ‘street collection licence’ in your local area).  Give yourself plenty of time to apply for the licence.

Once you have your collection booked in, please tell us about it so that we know where you will be and when.

Raffles

Raffles are an excellent way to boost the amount you raise. However, because the win is based on luck, it is classed as gambling – meaning there are rules which must be followed.

To keep your raffle in line with these rules you must do both of the following:

  • You can only run it in one location (e.g. your work place or an event venue)

  • Your raffle must not run for longer than a single day.

You must provide physical tickets to those taking part in your raffle. There are no rules for what must be printed on the tickets, for example you can use cloakroom tickets.

  • There is no limit on how much you can charge for a ticket.

  • You can apply discounts tickets for multiple purchases, such as buy on get one free.

  • You can’t sell tickets online (including social media).

More information about fundraising with lotteries (incl. raffles and sweepstakes)

If you are unsure of any of the rules, or have any questions at all please contact our experienced fundraising team on events@seeability.org

When it comes to organising your raffle prizes you’ve got two choices. You can fund and provide the prizes yourself, or you could approach local businesses to ask them to contribute a prize. When asking businesses, make sure to highlight what you are raising money for, how much you are hoping to raise and the impact this will have to SeeAbility. We can provide you with a letter of authorisation so that donors know that you are genuinely fundraising for us. Send us the details for your raffle to events@seeability.org and we will send this to you.

Alcohol

If your fundraising event is going to include the sale or serving of alcohol, please make sure your venue has an up-to-date alcohol license.

If you are supplying alcohol as a prize in your raffle, please ensure that tickets are not sold to people under the age of 18.
