Empowering lives through active support: A blog from Bill

A photo of BillHello, I’m Bill Kasonso. I’m a father of three and a husband, and I’ve been a Support Worker at SeeAbility for a year now. I'm also an Active Support Trainer. I’m naturally an optimistic person who loves to see the positive side of every situation. I thrive on bringing energy and positivity to everything I do, and I’m always excited by challenges because I see them as opportunities to grow and find solutions.

I’m passionate about supporting people to unlock their potential. What I love most about my role is witnessing people achieve things they once thought were impossible. For me, every day is a chance to learn, connect and make a difference.

Why active support is so important

Active support is at the core of my work. What I enjoy most about it is that it focuses on empowering people to take part in everyday tasks, helping them build their independence, confidence and skills. The key difference with active support is that it’s not about doing things for the people we support - it’s about doing things with them.

It’s about giving people the chance to engage in their own lives, no matter their ability. It’s not just about completing tasks, it’s about giving people the opportunity to be involved, make choices, and take control of their daily activities. It’s a dignified and inclusive approach that ensures everyone has a role in their own life.

As a Support Worker, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact that active support has on the people we support. I love seeing them gain confidence and reach new milestones, whether it’s learning to cook a meal or making an important decision for themselves.

Training others in active support

I’m also passionate about training others to practice active support. It’s such a transformative approach, not just for the people we support but for the Support Workers too. It redefines what it means to be a Support Worker, it teaches us how to enable people, rather than taking over.

The training helps us understand how small, purposeful actions can lead to big results. It challenges assumptions and helps us see the potential in everyone we support. Through this approach, we learn how to connect with the people we support in a more empathetic, patient and creative way.

My hopes for the future

Looking ahead, I see great opportunities for both our support teams and the people we support. I hope that the lessons we learn through active support will continue to help our teams create environments where people can thrive and reach their potential.

For those we support, I see a future where opportunities are endless, a future where barriers are broken, achievements are celebrated, and every voice is heard. I believe we can continue to promote independence, dignity and personal growth for everyone we support.
