Scott's Story
Scott Watkin BEM is our Head of Engagement and has learning disabilities and sight loss.
In 2017, he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his tireless work in the disability community. Here he tells us his story of being underestimated and fighting to be valued.
He is now living a life so many told him was impossible.
"When I was in school, I was told by my teacher I would never live independently, have a job or a family. My life hasn’t been easy and I have had to fight to be valued. But today, I live in my own home with my wife and daughter.
"I have built a career I am really proud of - advising government, challenging peoples’ perceptions of disability and now as part of SeeAbility’s Leadership Group, leading our work on engagement.
"I know many more people who have learning disabilities or are autistic who are ready, willing and able to work. All they need is the right support and for employers to value their talents and believe in them."
